Trades

I think I’d vote that if a top five player at a position is up for bids that the owner just puts that out on the group text.  That’s the only frustration I have with dynasty at times is in offseason some dude gets traded that you never in a million years thought was available.  I’d just say if we have a rule for this is if you have a player that’s top 5 player at his position per a certain agreed upon website, that you put in group text you got an offer for X player and let anyone who wants to make an offer for 24 hours or something.  Reason I say group text is I get on as much as the next guy but in offseason I’m not checking the trade block daily.

Trades

 Hi Gang,

Commish here......there has been a bit of consternation regarding some recent trades in the YODFL. Please understand, all of these trades are well within the CURRENT trade rules we have in place. As all of you seasoned FF players know, a trade’s perceived value, or actual value, or an owner’s personal reasons, or analytical reasons, for making a trade are all in the eye of the beholder...what make's perfect sense to one player may look like complete rubbish to another. But fundamentally, it is that person’s choice.

As a commissioner, I must be cognizant on how trades may impact the competitive balance of the league and protect against any perception of collusion. In my 40 years of playing Fantasy Football, I have never encountered any acts of collusion, not once. So, I am a firm believer that no one is trying to collude in our league, full stop. That said, and trying not to let personal bias come into play, it is the commissioner’s job to approve, or deny a trade. I think most of you know my complete and utter abhorrence to denying any trade. In fact, since the Running back for Kicker debacle of the early 00’s in the BDFL, I have not vetoed one trade...not one. These things all have a tendency to come out in the wash.

With all that in mind, I believe we have some gaps in our trade set up that might negatively impact the long-term competitive balance of this hybrid Keeper/Dynasty league. First, and most importantly to me, the spirit of playing fantasy football is that we all enter a season TRYING to win games. It should be everyone’s goal to try and field a competitive team every year. Does this collide with an owner that is forward thinking, looking at future draft capital, and making moves two years in advance to be able to dominate the future draft? Maybe, a little. But, as some of us learned in 12 Monkeys, tanking teams do impact the spirit of the game and leads to some despondency in other owners. I don’t want that in this league. However, we also need to be cognizant of each individual’s personal preference to put more value on picks, or more value on players or trading every week, or never trading at all…. there are many ways to win a championship, and all have value, and all can lead to winning.

I’m not claiming I know what needs to change; I need everyone’s help. Here are some of my thoughts, again, I’m just spit balling here:

  • There should be a way, when offering up top tier (say consensus top 3 or 5 players at each position) to allow a competitive process for folks to make offers on said player. I get that we have the trade block and posting the player you may wish to trade on the trade block should be enough. I think the main issue is timing. Is posting, then accepting an offer in 40 mins sufficient? Likely not for the top players. Not everyone may have a chance to see the posting. (Side note, if you don’t go to the site regularly, that’s on you, not the posting owner; I would recommend checking in periodically, nuff said.). So, should there be a rule where if you are looking to trade, for example Josh Allen or Jamyr Gibbs, that the offer remains active for a set period of time? Tough to manage, but doable. What makes sense, 5 days? 3? 10? Any thoughts?
  • A trade should have some semblance of direct benefit for both owners within a specific time frame. For example, trading a first round pick this year for a first-round pick two or three years out, vastly benefits the owner this year, vastly. I get that some folks really are analytical and forward looking - maybe this year’s draft sucks in their minds, or, when looking at potential drafts two or three years out they want to try and make sure they are in position for a guy they are tracking in college, or any other number of reasons. The thing is we all know these things can change greatly in two- or three-years’ time, and planning on your return that far out is not relevant to this season. I don’t know how you determine what’s fair here, but a similar kind of scenario may apply. Let’s compare it to this example – An owner decides to trade all of his future draft capital to win this year; they trade all their first, second and third round picks away for next three years, then doesn’t win; with no penalty for doing this, they quit. The league would now become defunct as a team like that would likely never want to be picked up by a new owner. So what do you do? One thought may be that you make them pay league fees in advance for the years in the future they are trading away; this may make them be less inclined to trade many years out. I feel something similar could be applied when making pick for future pick trades, I’m just not sure how to implement or what would be fair.
  • Lastly, should we consider limiting how many times a year an owner can trade with a specific owner. I get it, we all are more comfortable trading with people we know or are our friends, or to owners who at least respond to our offers 😉; and I also am very aware that we don’t all know each other personally in this league (all the more reason a live draft some day in the future would be awesome), but when some players make frequent trades with a specific trading partner, it could inadvertently appear to be playing favorites. (Sorry, just don’t know how else to say this..lol). Perhaps we limit to three times a year or something. Honestly, this is the least of my worries, but wanted to put it out there.

If you guys are up for it, I’d like us to have a zoom to discuss any updates we may want to make to our trading rules (or any other rules for that matter). I could set something up next week (or start the draft zoom earlier), or we could discuss during the season. Also, i'd appreciate any of your thoughts on the topic...this league is all of ours.

Sorry for the tome; I just want to make sure this league has survivor power and want everyone to enjoy it. Looking forward to the draft Gang! Thanks for listening to my rant.
