2019 RTSports Outlook

Stafford had one of his worst seasons of his career, scoring just 21 touchdowns. He finished 20th overall in fantasy quarterback scoring. The entire Lions offense struggled, though, because of injuries and trade (Golden Tate). Stafford felt the impact of this, leading to arguably his worst statistical season as a full-time starter. He did complete 66 percent of his passes, which was a positive, but averaged just 6.81 yards per pass attempt. Stafford broke a streak of three straight seasons as a top-10 fantasy quarterback. He will look to rebound this year in the Lions pass-friendly offense. Before last season, Stafford had seven straight 4,000-yard seasons and three of those seasons with 30-plus scores. Stafford has a huge arm, moves around the pocket well and is a big, strong quarterback. He will force some passes, but has really improved on that in recent years. He has taken his game to a new level in recent seasons before last season's hiccup.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Stafford is a good buy-low candidate. He has a track record of success and been a top-10 fantasy quarterback in recent seasons. But even with that said, consider him a top No. 2 quarterback and platoon player. Stafford will throw for around 4,300 yards and get around 30 touchdowns.

RotoBaller's Outlook

After seven straight seasons as a top-15 fantasy quarterback five of which featured top-10 finishes the 2018 season wasnt kind to Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, who struggled all year and finished as the overall QB20. Stafford threw for under 4000 yards for the first time as a full-time starter, and while he completed a higher percentage of his passes than he did in 2016 or 2017, he finished with just 21 touchdown passes, his fewest since 2012. Factor in his usual double-digit interceptions, and 2018 was a year that Stafford, Lions fans, and Stafford fantasy owners would love to forget. But will he bounce back in 2019? The Lions added Danny Amendola to their receiving room, but at this point, he wont be a great replacement for the traded Golden Tate. Rookie tight end T.J. Hockenson should help, but the Lions, behind Kerryon Johnson, are likely to depend more on their running game this year. Staffords career history suggest he can return to the top-10 at the quarterback position, but last years performance and the small improvements the team made this offseason suggest that fantasy owners shouldnt have much confidence in that, especially as younger quarterbacks continue to improve around the league. Staffords a solid, late-round pick to be your teams backup quarterback, but look elsewhere for someone to trust as your fantasy starter.

Fantasy Spin: Stafford will remained sidelined in Week 14, and there is a good chance he won't play again this season. If you own Stafford in a dynasty league, he should be ready to roll for 2020.

From TheHuddle

Dec 6 5:33pm ET

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (back, hip) did not participate in practice Friday, Dec. 6, and has been ruled out for Week 14.

Dec 5 6:33pm ET

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (back, hip) did not participate in practice Thursday, Dec. 5.

Fantasy Spin: Stafford probably will miss another game, so David Blough should receive another start. Blough played well last week but can be avoided in most fantasy leagues this week because of the matchup.

From TheHuddle

Dec 4 8:00pm ET

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford (back) said his back is healing "as it should" and that the injury won't be something that's an issue in 2020 or beyond. Stafford will miss his fifth straight game in Week 14 against the Vikings, though, and it seems unlikely he'll return in 2019. The Lions are 0-4 in Stafford's absence and are now down to third-stringer David Blough after Jeff Driskel (hamstring) was put on Injured Reserve last weekend. Before his injury, Stafford had 2,499 yards and 19 touchdowns in the first eight games of the season. He was on pace to set career highs in passer rating (106) and yards per attempt (8.6). Heading into next season, Stafford will be a highly coveted high-end QB2 for fantasy owners.

From RotoBaller

Dec 4 4:13pm ET

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (back, hip) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Dec. 4.

Fantasy Spin: There is no timetable for Stafford's return, so fantasy players should avoid him until he is able to return to practice. David Blough likely will receive another start but can be avoided in fantasy leagues.

From TheHuddle

Dec 2 3:40pm ET

Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia said that the team is "going to keep that door open" for quarterback Matthew Stafford (back) to return this year "out of respect for Matthew and his competitiveness." With just four games remaining and the Lions out of playoff contention, though, it seems like a long shot that we'll see Stafford back on the field again in 2019. It's a shame, too, since he was having a career year before his injury. Jeff Driskel was put on Injured Reserve over the weekend, so David Blough will remain the starter for the foreseeable future. He didn't embarrass himself against Chicago on Thanksgiving, but he'll be a low-end QB2 for as long as he's starting.

From RotoBaller

Nov 28 11:43am ET

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (back) is inactive for the Week 13 game Thursday, Nov. 28.

Fantasy Spin: Undrafted rookie David Blough draws the start against the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving. He has no fantasy appeal in the tough matchup.

From TheHuddle

Nov 28 11:33am ET

The Detroit Lions have declared OG Beau Benzschawel, QB Matthew Stafford, CB Michael Jackson, DL Damon Harrison, CB Jamal Agnew, OT Oday Aboushi and CB Rashaan Melvin inactive for Week 13.

From TheHuddle

Nov 27 3:50pm ET

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford (back, hip) missed practice all week and has been ruled out for Week 13 against the Bears on Thursday. It will be his fourth straight missed game, but Stafford does want to return to play in 2019 when he's cleared by doctors. With the fantasy playoffs starting next week in most leagues, time is running out for Stafford to help his fantasy owners in what had been a career year before his injury. With Jeff Driskel questionable to suit up on Thanksgiving Day, rookie David Blough would be the fill-in against a tough Chicago defense.

From RotoBaller

Nov 27 3:33pm ET

Detroit Lions CB Jamal Agnew (ankle), WR Marvin Hall (foot), CB Rashaan Melvin (ribs) and QB Matthew Stafford (hip/back) didn't practice Wednesday, Nov. 27, and have been ruled out for the game Thursday, Nov. 28, against the Chicago Bears. DL Da'Shawn Hand (ankle), DT Damon Harrison (knee/calf) and DB Tracy Walker were limited and are considered questionable. DE Trey Flowers (concussion) practiced in full and is questionable. P Sam Martin (abdomen), OL Frank Ragnow (concussion) and G Kenny Wiggins (knee) practiced in full and were removed from the injury report. Participation designations are estimations based on Wednesday's walkthrough.

DE Trey Flowers (concussion) was upgraded to a limited practice, while QB Jeff Driskel (hamstring), DL Da'Shawn Hand (ankle), DT Damon Harrison (knee), TE T.J. Hockenson (shoulder), P Sam Martin (abdomen) and DB Tracy Walker (knee) were limited for a second straight day. OL Frank Ragnow (concussion) was upgraded to full practice, while OG Kenny Wiggins (knee) again practiced in full. Detroit only participated in a walk-through Tuesday, so all designations are estimates.

From TheHuddle

Nov 25 5:13pm ET

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (back, hip) did not participate in practice Monday, Nov. 25. The Lions did not hold a practice Monday, so this is an estimation.

Fantasy Spin: There is no timetable for Stafford's return, so fantasy players should not expect him to play this week. Jeff Driskel should receive another start if he is healthy and can be a starting option in two-quarterback leagues.

From TheHuddle

Nov 24 11:53am ET

The Detroit Lions have considered shutting down QB Matthew Stafford (back) for the remainder of the season, although he would like to return before the end of the year, according to multiple sources.

Fantasy Spin: Stafford will miss his third consecutive game versus the Washington Redskins this afternoon but he has not officially been ruled out of the Thanksgiving Day contest versus the Chicago Bears, although it appears unlikely he will make it back in time for that game. Jeff Driskel will remain the Lions' starter in his absence and is worthy of consideration as a low-end QB1 option against the Redskins.
