2019 RTSports Outlook

With LeVeon Bell holding out, Conner assumed the lead back duties for the Steelers and played at a high level in that role. He was sixth overall in fantasy running back scoring despite missing three games late in the year because of injury. Conner had five 100-yard rushing games, finishing with 973 yards in 13 games. He also found the end zone 13 times and had 55 receptions. Conner showed he can handle the load as a three-down back for the Steelers, a role he will serve again this year. Conner is an explosive player. He does well between the tackles but also has enough speed to make plays on the outside. He also will run through defenders and make a lot of plays after contact. Conner is an improving pass catcher that should keep getting better with more seasoning.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Conner is an elite fantasy back in this offense. He is capable of leading all fantasy backs in scoring. Just look at what Bell did as the starter in this offense. Conner can have similar success. Conner can get around 1,900 total yards, double-digit scores and 70 receptions.

RotoBaller's Outlook

James Conner finished 2018 as the overall RB6 by average fantasy points per game. His average finish actually doesn't do him justice as his 22.3 ppg would typically be enough for a top three finish at the position. 2018 was just an incredible year for elite RBs. If Conner maintains a 65% opportunity share or better, he is a lock for another RB1 performance, health permitting. The only concern I have regarding Conner this season is his usage. It is my contention that Jaylen Samuels is a better player than Conner. Even taking that out of this, Samuels is one of the best receiving backs in the league. He is going to see work. He has the size and athleticism to be a three down back. Samuels is not a threat to fully supplant Conner as the lead back, but he could turn this into a full blown timeshare. Conner's goal line work is not going away so, at worst, he should have 50% of the carries and all the goal line work. Conner is not going to completely bust unless he gets hurt. However, Conner has just one season of production, was not a highly touted prospect, and is not a great athlete. The Steelers don't owe Conner anything. If Samuels is better, Samuels can really be a problem for Conner's value. Week 1 may very well come around and Conner just dominates touches, rendering all of this Samuels talk as "noise." But we draft before Week 1 and there is risk associated with Conner. I feel much better about Conner in the mid to late second round than at the back end of the first and would prefer the safety of an elite WR over Conner.

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (shoulder) was limited during practice Thursday, Dec. 5.

Fantasy Spin: Conner is not expected to play this week even though he has been limited during practice. Benny Snell likely will receive most of the carries against the Arizona Cardinals and can be at least a flex option in leagues.

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (shoulder) said Thursday, Dec. 5, that he will miss the team's Week 14 game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Fantasy Spin: Conner has logged only six touches since Week 8, and it's rapidly becoming a lost second half of the season. In the meantime, Benny Snell and Jaylen Samuels are ready to shoulder the backfield load for another week.

From TheHuddle

Dec 5 2:20pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner (shoulder) has been ruled out for Week 14 against the Cardinals despite getting in some limited practice this week. It will be his third straight missed game, and fantasy owners shouldn't be holding out much hope that he can help you the rest of the way if you've made the fantasy playoffs. A Pro Bowler in 2018, Conner has disappointed with 390 rushing yards and five missed games. Benny Snell Jr. should continue to carry the load on early downs in Conner's absence. He'll be an upside RB3 in the good matchup with Arizona, but Jaylen Samuels should continue to see more work in the passing game.

Dec 4 4:03pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (shoulder) was limited in practice Wednesday, Dec. 4.

Fantasy Spin: Conner hasn't played since leaving the Week 11 game against the Cleveland Browns. He'll likely return to his full workload once cleared to play and will be an RB2 for the fantasy playoffs.

From TheHuddle

Dec 3 1:33pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (shoulder) has a chance to practice Wednesday, Dec. 4, and he'll be questionable this week.

Fantasy Spin: Conner is trending up if he could potentially practice early in the week. Conner will have a good matchup against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 14 if he can go. He'd be a low-end RB2.

From TheHuddle

Dec 3 12:50pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said that there is no clarity yet on wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster (knee) or running back James Conner (shoulder), and they are both questionable to play in Week 14 against the Cardinals. Both players were in the training room on Monday, and Conner has a chance to practice on Wednesday. Conner and Smith-Schuster have both been out since Nov. 14. You shouldn't be counting on either if you made the fantasy playoffs. Benny Snell Jr. has been seeing most of the early down work in Conner's absence, but he has been ceding pass-game work to Jaylen Samuels and others, so he's a touchdown-dependent RB3, at best. In JuJu's absence, James Washington has stepped up and become flex-worthy for fantasy owners. Both he and Diontae Johnson could have good games against Arizona's non-existent secondary if Smith-Schuster misses another game. Keep a close eye on their practices statuses this week.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have declared CB Artie Burns, QB Paxton Lynch, LB Tuzar Skipper, RB James Conner, OT Chukwuma Okorafor, WR JuJu Smith-Schuster and TE Zach Gentry inactive for Week 13.

From TheHuddle

Nov 29 3:40pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner (shoulder) is doubtful to play in Week 13 against the Browns. Conner just isn't ready to return to the team's backfield, but Week 14 is a realistic target at this point. Continue to leave him on your bench. Pittsburgh's offense is a shell of its former self with wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster (knee) also out. Benny Snell Jr. should lead this backfield once again against Cleveland, but he's not a three-down back and will share snaps with Jaylen Samuels and others, making him a low-upside RB3 this weekend.

Nov 29 3:03pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster (knee) did not practice all week and has been ruled out for Week 13 against the Cleveland Browns. RB James Conner (shoulder) was limited in practice for a second straight day Friday, Nov. 29, and is listed as doubtful. CB Artie Burns (knee) was upgraded to full practice Friday and is listed as questionable. OT Alejandro Villanueva (shoulder) and OG Ramon Foster (non-injury) practiced in full Friday and no longer appear on the injury report.

Nov 29 2:43pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (shoulder) was limited in practice for a second straight day Friday, Nov. 29, and is listed as doubtful for Week 13 against the Cleveland Browns.

Fantasy Spin: Connor surprised a few folks by making it through a limited practice Wednesday after telling reporters earlier in the week "it'll be a little longer" before he was able to return, but it appears he'll miss his fourth game of the season as expected. The Pittsburgh backfield has become a mess in his absence, as Benny Snell, Jaylen Samuels, Trey Edmunds and Kerrith Whyte all got touches last week. Snell and Samuels remain the best fantasy plays, but neither can be trusted as more than a flex at the moment.

From TheHuddle

Nov 28 2:33pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster (concussion, knee) and OG Ramon Foster (non-injury) were unable to practice Thursday, Nov. 28. RB James Conner (shoulder) and CB Artie Burns (knee) were upgraded to a limited session. OT Alejandro Villanueva (shoulder) was upgraded to full practice.

From TheHuddle

Nov 28 2:10pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner (shoulder) got in a limited practice on Thursday after sitting out on Wednesday. It means that Conner has a shot to play in Week 13 against the Browns after sitting out in Week 12, but he's still not a guarantee to return this weekend. Unless we get confirmation that he'll suit up, you need to keep backup plans in place in case Conner misses another contest. Benny Snell Jr. saw most of the backfield work last week with Conner out, with Jaylen Samuels playing second fiddle. Snell would be a mediocre RB3 choice if Conner misses another game. His practice status on Friday should help clear the picture up a bit.

From RotoBaller

Nov 28 1:33pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (shoulder) was limited in practice Thursday, Nov. 28.

Fantasy Spin: Him taking part at all was a good sign, but he'll still likely draw a questionable status for Week 13. Benny Snell dominated the work last week with 21 carries for 98 yards, and he could to the same again with Jaylen Samuel in on passing downs. Both are flex options against the Cleveland Browns if Conner sits again. Conner would be an RB2 if he returns.

From TheHuddle

Nov 27 4:10pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner (shoulder) did not practice on Wednesday. Conner has been out since the last meeting with Cleveland on Nov. 14, and so far this week he doesn't look like a candidate to face the Browns the second time around this Sunday. Unless he returns to practice later this week, you'll have to look elsewhere at the running back spot. If Conner misses another game, Jaylen Samuels will continue to have RB2 upside, especially in PPR leagues.

From RotoBaller

Nov 27 3:43pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (shoulder) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Nov. 27.

Fantasy Spin: Conner was not able to play last week and said he does not plan to rush back, so he could miss more time because of the injury. Benny Snell probably would receive most of the carries if Conner is ruled out and could be a flex option in standard leagues.

From TheHuddle

Nov 25 9:53pm ET

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (shoulder) said Monday, Nov. 25 in a radio interview that he is making progress in his return, but stabilization is an issue. 'I'm definitely making progress on it. Getting a lot more strength in there, more stabilization. It's one of those things that as a player I have to be smart with because if I continue to play without it being stable, then eventually surgery will need to be done. So, I just need to wait till I have enough stabilization and strength and that tendon gets a little bit stronger, because that's kind of what I had, a little minor setback when I tried to play versus Cleveland,' Conner said.

Fantasy Spin: All signs point to Conner missing the Browns game in Week 13. Benny Snell Jr. carried the load with rookie newcomer Kerrith Whyte also seeing some time in the backfield. Jaylen Samuels did not see an increase in workload, although he did see touches, and is also likely to factor in on passing downs.

From TheHuddle

Nov 25 6:13pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (shoulder) said he may need to undergo surgery on his shoulder if he is not careful with the injury. He said the ligaments in the shoulder need to be stronger.

Fantasy Spin: It seems like Conner will miss more time because of the injury, but fantasy players will have a better idea on his status later in the week. Benny Snell is coming off a productive Week 12 performance and probably would be the main option in the running game if Conner is ruled out. Snell could be a flex option in standard leagues this week.

From TheHuddle

Nov 24 11:43am ET

The Pittsburgh Steelers have declared CB Artie Burns, QB Paxton Lynch, LB Tuzar Skipper, RB James Conner, OT Chukwuma Okorafor, WR JuJu Smith-Schuster and TE Zach Gentry inactive for Week 12.

From TheHuddle

Nov 22 5:00pm ET

Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner (shoulder) and wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster (concussion, knee) won't be on the field for Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Conner had five carries for 10 yards in Week 11 before exiting after re-aggravating his shoulder injury. Meanwhile, Smith-Schuster took a hit to the head, on a pass over the middle, in the same game and was forced to leave. Both absences leave the Steelers very empty handed on offense. Look for Jaylen Samuels and either Trey Edmunds or Benny Snell Jr. to share the backfield duties, while Diontae Johnson (concussion) and James Washington to be the primary targets in the passing game.
