2019 RTSports Outlook

Darnold showed well in his rookie year, throwing for nearly 3,000 yards with 18 total touchdowns despite missing three games because of a foot injury. He played his best football late in the season, having five touchdowns without a turnover his last three games. He did have a few turnover issues throughout the season, getting picked off 15 times. He had four games with multiple interceptions. Darnold seemed to learn from his mistakes, though, and played better, mistake free football as the season progressed. Darnold didn't have the greatest weapons to work with offensively last season, so he will need some help at receiver and running back if he hopes to elevate his game this year. New head coach Adam Gase should be a big plus for Darnold. He is an offensive-minded coach with a good history of mentoring quarterbacks. Darnold has a great arm, can make plays down the field or on shorter throws, and also moves around the pocket pretty well. He will turn the ball over, though, which was an issue last season,

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Darnold was spot start material as a rookie with little help, so he has some potential to improve this year. He is a young player with a lot of promise. He isn't a plug-in starter yet but could reach that level soon. For now, consider him more of a platoon quarterback. He can throw for 3,500 yards with 25 total scores and 13 or so interceptions.

RotoBaller's Outlook

To understand the excitement building around the development of second-year quarterback Sam Darnold under the tutelage of new head coach Adam Gase, look no further than new Jets wide-receiver coach Shawn Jefferson, who recently used four curses in two sentences to describe the throwing abilities of the former USC signal-caller. The PG translation? Sam Darnold has a cannon and is really, really accurate. After taking him third overall in last years draft, the Jets, and their fans are expecting more in Darnolds sophomore campaign after last years lackluster rookie offering. His first pass of the season was a pick-six and from there the season didnt go that much better. Through the first 9 games of the season, Darnold had just 11 touchdowns, with 11 interceptions to match. Darnold then missed Weeks 10 12 with an ankle injury but came back to finish strong in the last four games of the season, throwing six touchdowns to only one interception. Additionally, he completed 64% of his passes, which was a significant improvement over the 55% rate that he had posted prior to the injury.Besides now being under the care of Gase, a supposed offensive guru, Darnold is also surrounded with better weapons. The Jets brought in Jamison Crowder and Ty Montgomery, to join a healthy Quincy Enunwa and emerging tight end Chris Herndon. Oh, and they also added all-world running back, LeVeon Bell. With new and improved weapons, in a new and improved system, Darnold is poised to make a large leap forward in his second year. With an NFBC ADP of #128 overall, as the 25th QB being taken, Darnold arguably has the upside of a QB1, but with the price-tag of Andy Dalton.

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold went 19-for-30 for 230 yards and one touchdown against the New York Giants in Week 10. He also rushed for 25 yards and one touchdown on three carries during the game.

Fantasy Spin: Darnold snapped his four-game interception streak this week and posted at least two total touchdowns for the third time in six games. He will be facing the Washington Redskins next week but may still only be a starting option in two-quarterback leagues.

Nov 10 5:00pm ET

New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold completed 19 of 30 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown in a Week 10 win over the Giants. Darnold added 25 yards and a touchdown on three rushing attempts and most importantly didn't turn the ball over after throwing 8 interceptions in his previous three games. Darnold came out of the gates firing, completing all seven passes on the opening drive which culminated on his second career rushing touchdown on a perfectly executed zone read. Things aren't perfect for Darnold as he missed a few throws later in the game, but he played well enough to be trusted as a bye-week streamer next week with another good matchup at Washington.

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold (thumb) fully participated in practice Friday, Nov. 8, and is not on the injury report for Week 10.

Fantasy Spin: Darold has thrown nine interceptions and only five touchdowns over the last four games. He can still be a starting option in two-quarterback leagues with six teams on bye but should be avoided in all standard leagues.

From TheHuddle

Nov 8 2:50pm ET

New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold has a good matchup this week vs the Giants, but will be hard to trust given his play over the past few weeks. Darnold has thrown eight interceptions in his last three games and is only completing 63.2 percent of his attempts on the season. The Giants secondary is beatable but Darnold may not have time to do it, the Jets have given up 37 sacks this season which is the second-most in the NFL. Start Darnold in 2QB leagues, but other than that format he's just a desperation bye-week replacement in deeper leagues.

From RotoBaller

Fantasy Spin: Darnold has struggled over the last few weeks but has a chance to be successful against the New York Giants. He can be a starting option in two-quarterback leagues but probably can be avoided in standard leagues.

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold went 27-for-39 for 260 yards, one touchdown and one interception against the Miami Dolphins in Week 9.

Fantasy Spin: Darnold has thrown nine interceptions and five touchdowns in his last four games. He will be facing the New York Giants next week but probably should only be a starting option in two-quarterback leagues.

From TheHuddle

Nov 3 5:30pm ET

New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold completed 27 of 39 passes for 260 yards with one touchdown and one interception in a loss to Miami Sunday. Darnold connected with Jamison Crowder for a touchdown on the opening drive, but was silent after that as the Jets offense continues to struggle. The stats actually look better than Darnold played as there were a litany of errors the young signal-caller got away with as he continues to make poor decisions with the football. The Jets have a soft schedule coming up, but it's hard to trust Darnold moving forward in anything other than a 2QB league.

From RotoBaller

Nov 2 11:00am ET

New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold begins a stretch of great matchups this Sunday when the Jets head to Miami to face the winless Dolphins. Darnold has struggled lately throwing seven interceptions in his last two games but now begins a stretch where five of his next six opponents are in the top-10 in fantasy points allowed to opposing quarterbacks. It's hard to trust Darnold given his recent struggles, but he's a good add now to use as a streamer or bye-week replacement as his stock is down at the moment but could rebound in a matchup vs a Dolphins team that allows the fourth-most fantasy points to QBs and just lost their top cornerback. Darnold is a decent streamer in deep leagues, and should be started with confidence in 2QB formats.

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold (thumb) fully participated in practice Friday, Nov. 1, and is not on the injury report for Week 9.

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold (thumb) fully participated in practice Thursday, Oct. 31.

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold (thumb) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 30.

From TheHuddle

Oct 30 12:40pm ET

New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold (thumb) will practice in full on Wednesday with a splint on his left thumb. Darnold was injured in Week 8 but will play this Sunday in a great matchup with the winless Dolphins. The injury is to his non-throwing hand, so it shouldn't have a big effect on his performance. Darnold has had two straight terrible performances against the Patriots and Jaguars. He should be able to bounce back with a cake matchup this weekend, but fantasy owners still shouldn't treat him as anything more than a middling QB2.

From RotoBaller

Oct 30 12:13pm ET

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold (thumb) will fully practice with a splint on his left thumb Wednesday, Oct. 30. Darnold should be good to go, and he'll be a streaming option against the Miami Dolphins.

From TheHuddle

Oct 28 3:43pm ET

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold (thumb) has been diagnosed with a sprained left thumb but expects to be fine while acknowledging his injury will be a 'pain-tolerance thing' moving forward.

Fantasy Spin: Darnold has had a forgettable season thus far, only showing well in a Week 6 upset of the Dallas Cowboys. Fortunately for him, few quarterbacks have an easier remaining schedule. Over the next six weeks, the Jets face the Miami Dolphins twice along with the Washington Redskins and Cincinnati Bengals once. Despite coming off a poor start in Week 8, Darnold will remain in the QB2 conversation in Week 9 in Miami.

From TheHuddle

Oct 27 10:03pm ET

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold completed 21 of his 30 passes for 218 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in a 29-15 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 8, and he was sacked eight times.

Fantasy Spin: Since returning from a bout with mono, Darnold has thrown eight interceptions in three games. His numbers are bound to improve, but outside of keeper formats, fantasy owners should take a wait-and-see approach.
