New England Patriots running backs Rex Burkhead and James White have taken the majority of the first-team repetitions in offseason workouts. However, it wouldn't be surprising to see rookie Sony Michel, the 31st overall pick in the draft, rise to the top of this group by the time the season starts. Jeremy Hill and Mike Gillislee may be left off the final roster. Michel has the most upside, but in true Bill Belichick fashion, we'll probably see a mix of all three backs leading the backfield at some point on a weekly basis. New England's backfield, as always, will be extremely hard to predict on a week-to-week basis.

Jan 31 5:50pm ET

New England Patriots running back James White is only one year removed from 139 total yards and 14 receptions in the Patriots Super Bowl comeback last season against the Falcons. This season White has returned to his complementary role, receiving only 43 carries all season for 171 yards. The veteran running back presents a change of pace for a Patriots offense that will face an Eagles defensive front that allowed the second fewest fantasy points to opposing backs. White should not be expected to play the hero again in this year's Super Bowl but don't count him out to make one big play during Sunday's final matchup.

Jan 14 12:53am ET

New England Patriots RB James White rushed four times for 11 yards and a touchdown and caught four passes for 29 yards and a score in a 35-14 win over the Tennessee Titans Saturday, Jan. 13.

Jan 13 7:03pm ET

New England Patriots RB James White (ankle) is officially active for the Divisional Round playoff game against the Tennessee Titans.

Jan 13 6:40pm ET

New England Patriots running back James White (ankle) is expected to face the Titans in the Divisional Round on Saturday, according to a source. With both Rex Burkhead (knee) and Mike Gillislee (knee) expected to be inactive, White could have a significant role behind Dion Lewis on passing downs, especially with the Titans possessing a strong run defense. White will be cheap sleeper play in PPR DFS formats this weekend if Burkhead and Gillislee are indeed ruled out Saturday evening.

Jan 13 10:33am ET

New England Patriots RB James White (ankle) is expected to play in the team's Divisional Round playoff game against the Tennessee Titans Saturday, Jan. 13.

Jan 11 4:23pm ET

New England Patriots RB James White (ankle) was limited during practice Thursday, Jan. 11, and is listed as questionable for the Divisional Round playoff game against the Tennessee Titans.

Jan 11 4:23pm ET

New England Patriots LB Marquis Flowers (illness), RB Mike Gillislee (knee), DT Alan Branch (knee), RB Rex Burkhead (knee), DE Eric Lee (ankle, finger) and RB James White (ankle) were limited during practice Thursday, Jan. 11, and are listed as questionable for the Divisional Round playoff game against the Tennessee Titans.

Jan 11 4:10pm ET

New England Patriots running backs Rex Burkhead (knee), James White (ankle) and Mike Gillislee (knee) are all listed as questionable for the Divisional Round against the Titans after practicing on a limited basis Thursday. All three are expected to be healthy enough to play, but Gillislee will likely be the odd-man out as an inactive, like he has been for much of the year. Dion Lewis is really the only realistic DFS option out of this backfield, although Burkhead is a sleeper in PPR formats if he's close to full health and isn't limited at all.

Jan 10 7:10pm ET

New England Patriots wide receiver Chris Hogan (shoulder) and running back James White (ankle) were both limited in practice Wednesday. Both players are expected to play after sitting out in Week 17, although both are extremely risky options for fantasy owners. Hogan has played just once since Week 8 and had one catch. He'll have a nice matchup against the Titans, but he'll most likely be rusty and could easily disappoint. White will be battling for touches with Dion Lewis and Rex Burkhead, so his upside is limited, too.

Jan 10 5:53pm ET

New England Patriots RB James White (ankle) was limited during practice Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Jan 9 6:00pm ET

New England Patriots running backs Rex Burkhead (knee) and James White (ankle) and wide receiver Chris Hogan (shoulder) were all limited in practice Tuesday. All three players are expected to return in the Divisional Round against the Titans this Saturday, which means running back Mike Gillislee (knee), who didn't practice Tuesday, will likely be inactive again. Burkhead is the main pass-catching back for the Patriots and can be a sneaky DFS play in PPR formats. The return of both Burkhead and White will be bad news for Dion Lewis. Hogan has just one catch since Week 8 and is an extremely risky fantasy selection this weekend, even against a shaky Tennessee secondary.

Jan 9 5:33pm ET

New England Patriots RBs Rex Burkhead (knee) and James White (ankle) were limited practice participants Tuesday, Jan. 9.

Jan 7 1:43pm ET

New England Patriots RB James White (ankle) said he expects to be available for the Divisional Round playoff game.

Dec 31 1:00pm ET

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (shoulder, Achilles) will play on Sunday against the New York Jets. With the team already clinching a playoff berth, it is still business as usual in the final week of the regular season. Running backs Rex Burkhead (knee), Mike Gillislee (knee) and James White (ankle) are all out, which will mean a significant bump in work for running back Dion Lewis. Wide receiver Chris Hogan (shoulder) is out once again, and he's caught just one pass since Week 8. In his absence, expect more looks for wide receivers Danny Amendola, Brandin Cooks and possibly even Phillip Dorsett and Kenny Britt. Tight end Rob Gronkowski (illness) will play. After practicing spraringly throughout the week, Gronk will be good to go.

Dec 31 12:03pm ET

New England Patriots RB James White (ankle) has been declared inactive for the team's Week 17 game.

Dec 31 11:43am ET

The New England Patriots have declared DL Alan Branch, WR Chris Hogan, OL Cole Croston, LB David Harris, RB James White, RB Mike Gillislee, RB Rex Burkhead inactive for Week 17.

Dec 31 9:43am ET

New England Patriots RB James White (ankle) is not expected to play in Week 17's game against the New York Jets, according to a league source.

Dec 29 5:33pm ET

New England Patriots DE Alan Branch (knee), RB Rex Burkhead (knee) and RB Mike Gillislee (knee) did not practice Friday, Dec. 29, and they're out for the Week 17 game against the New York Jets. DL Eric Lee (ankle) did not practice and is listed as questionable, as are WR Chris Hogan (shoulder), CB Devin McCourty (shoulder), WR Matthew Slater (hamstring), LB Kyle Van Noy (calf), OT LaAdrian Waddle (ankle) and RB James White (ankle), who were limited in practice.

Dec 29 4:50pm ET

New England Patriots wide receiver Chris Hogan (shoulder) and running back James White (ankle) were limited in practice all week and are questionable to face the Jets in Week 17. This is the exact same routine both players followed last week before being inactive, so that may happen again in a winnable game the Patriots need to have in order to secure home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. Hogan has caught just one pass since Week 8 and would be an incredibly risky WR4/flex bet if he played. White would have an opportunity to be on the RB3/flex radar in PPR leagues if he plays, with Mike Gillislee (knee) already being ruled out.
