Dobbs was the top backup for the Steelers last season and was 6-of-12 for 43 yards with an interception in limited playing time. Dobbs will battle Mason Rudolph for the top backup spot this season with the team. Dobbs is an athletic quarterback that has a knack for making plays. He throws a very good deep ball and does a good job of going through his progressions to make the correct choice. Dobbs needs to add a little strength and doesn't always make the best decisions. He also could shore up his mechanics some when it comes to throwing the ball.
FANTASY OUTLOOK: If he finds his way onto the field, Dobbs might be worth a look for fantasy teams. He has some big-game potential, but he needs to win the backup job first.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are acquiring quarterback Joshua Dobbs from the Steelers on Monday in exchange for a 2020 fifth-round pick, according to sources. Dobbs will back up Gardner Minshew with Nick Foles (collarbone) on Injured Reserve for half the season. The 24-year-old attempted only 12 passes for 43 yards and one interception in five games for the Steelers in 2018. Even if he makes some starts in Jacksonville if Minshew struggles, Dobbs would be a bottom-barrel QB2, at best.
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Joshua Dobbs was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for a 2020 fifth-round draft pick Monday, Sept. 9.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have declared CB Justin Layne, DL Isaiah Buggs, SS Sean Davis, TE Zach Gentry, OL Fred Johnson, OT Chukwuma Okorafor and QB Joshua Dobbs inactive for Week 1.
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mason Rudolph was 7-for-11 for 125 yards and a touchdown in the preseason finale Thursday, Aug. 29. Rudolph led the team to three scoring opportunities. QB Joshua Dobbs was 3-for-5 for 21 yards. Both players are fighting for the backup quarterback spot.
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Joshua Dobbs started Thursday's preseason game and went 3-for-5 with 21 yards, while taking one rush for 11 yards along with fumbling on a sack early in the first quarter. Dobbs has been battling with Mason Rudolph to be Ben Roethlisberger's backup this year. One would assume the team would battle test Dobbs in the final preseason game but Rudolph saw more chances to sling the pigskin. Final cuts are due on Saturday so we'll know more of who the team chooses then, but Dobbs doesn't hold much fantasy value even if he makes the roster. He's able to make plays with his feet, but hasn't displayed the ability to be a franchise-leading quarterback.
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Joshua Dobbs finished 4 of 9 for 79 yards and an interception in Sunday's preseason win over Tennessee. Dobbs also rushed for 10 yards on five attempts. The third-year signal caller is fighting with Mason Rudolph to backup Ben Roethlisberger. In the preseason, he's thrown for 259 yards and two interceptions with no touchdowns. However, Dobbs' ability to make plays with his feet has kept him in the battle. While the odds are likely stacked against him, the Tennessee product doesn't carry any fantasy value, even if he wins the backup job.
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Joshua Dobbs finished 6-of-11 fo 95 yards with an interception, while also tucking and running once for five yards in Saturday's 17-7 preseason win over Kansas City. The 24-year-old started the second half after Mason Rudolph got the entire first half of the game, while Dobbs saw the majority of the first half in the first preseason game. The Steelers are giving both signal callers an ample opportunity to earn the spot of Ben Roethlisberger's backup. Dobbs served in the role last season, but after Pittsburgh drafted Rudolph in the third round of the 2018 draft, many knew that Rudolph will likely be the heir apparent. Dobbs holds no real fantasy value unless he earns the backup job and/or if Roethlisberger sustains a long-term injury.
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Joshua Dobbs went 5 of 8 for 85 yards, while also rushing for 44 yards on two carries in Friday's preseason win over Tampa Bay. Dobbs' big play in the evening was a 36 yard tuck-and-run in a second quarter drive then ended up with a field goal for Pittsburgh. Dobbs is fighting with second-year quarterback Mason Rudolph to serve as the team's backup quarterback. Dobbs is the only other quarterback on the roster, besides Ben Roethlisberger, who has thrown a pass in an NFL game, but this preseason battle will determine which way the team goes with their future. Dobbs doesn't have much dynasty value, as the cards are stacked against him, but if he is able to win the backup job and Big Ben gets hurt, then he will take over calling the shots for a high-end NFL offense.
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be rested for the preseason opener Friday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so head coach Mike Tomlin has tabbed Joshua Dobbs as his starter. Mason Rudolph is expected to follow Dobbs, as Big Ben is rested like most veterans for the exhibition opener. When healthy, Big Ben will be a borderline low-end QB1 or QB2 in most fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams as he adjusts to life without star wide receiver Antonio Brown (Raiders).
