2019 RTSports Outlook

Mayfield had a very good rookie season. He didn't open the season as starter for the Browns but quickly found his way into the starting lineup and had much success in the starting role, especially after the team fired head coach Hue Jackson. Mayfield was 17th overall in fantasy quarterback scoring despite playing 14 games. He nearly had a 4,000-yard season and finished with 27 touchdowns to 14 interceptions. Mayfield had scores all but the first game he played. He had nine multiple touchdown games and three 300-yard games. He is going to be the franchise quarterback for the Browns for years to come. He gets a new toy this season to work with, having Odell Beckham as his No. 1 target in the passing game. This is a huge plus for Mayfield and the entire Browns offense. Mayfield is a very athletic quarterback that does a great job of making plays on the move. He is an accurate passer with a strong arm and a knack for making plays. He lacks ideal height for the position, but that didn't seem to hold him back much his first season in the league.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Mayfield is a fantasy quarterback on the rise. He was a borderline No. 1 last year, so expect things to get better for him this season in year two, especially with Beckham now on his side. Consider him a low-end No. 1. He is going to have some huge games and finish with consistent numbers in this offense. He can throw for more than 4,000 yards and score 30 touchdowns to 12 or so interceptions.

RotoBaller's Outlook

The top rookie quarterback from the 2018 class did not take long before being named the starting QB for the Browns. Baker Mayfield finished the season with seven games as a QB1 in weekly scoring, with most of those coming once the team allowed Freddie Kitchens to call plays. Heading into 2019, now with Kitchens as HC and a slew of offensive weapons around him (Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry, and Antonio Callaway) Mayfield is flying up draft boards. His mid-summer ADP is 60th overall, making him the fifth QB selected in most drafts. With an expectedly tough schedule for the position (24th in points allowed to QBs) and an improving defense, Mayfield could potentially disappoint some owners that are willing to pull the trigger early in drafts. But by season's end, he will undoubtedly be among the league's best at the position in fantasy scoring. Look for his name to be among a few QBs that come off the board in the fifth or sixth round.

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield (hip) should not miss any practice time after injuring his hip during the Week 6 game, according to head coach Freddie Kitchens.

Fantasy Spin: Mayfield will have the bye week to rest the hip and should be on the field next week. He leads the league in interceptions with 11 and probably should be considered a No. 2 fantasy quarterback for the time being.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield had an up-and-down day in a 32-28 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 6. Mayfield completed 22 of his 37 passes for 249 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions while tacking on 35 rushing yards and a touchdown. Mayfield briefly left Sunday's game during the third quarter and was checked for a hip injury but he wound up not missing an offensive snap. He was noticeably limping on the field, however, particularly after completing a two-point conversion pass to Demetrius Harris in the fourth quarter. The Cleveland bye week comes at a good time as they will be idle in Week 7 before a Week 8 showdown with the New England Patriots. Mayfield has struggled this season, throwing an NFL-high 11 interceptions while playing behind one of the league's worst offensive lines.

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield completed 22-of-37 passes for 249 yards, one touchdowns and three interceptions in Week 6 against the Seattle Seahawks. He also rushed for 35 yards and a score.

Fantasy Spin: Mayfield is making too many mistakes, as that's now just five touchdowns and 11 interceptions through six outings, including at least one pick in each of the contests. Fantasy owners cannot trust him right now, as he is doing more bad than good. Perhaps he'll use the bye in Week 7 to try and right the ship.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield appeared to injure his lower back in the third quarter against the Seahawks. Mayfield was taken to the locker room for evaluation, but he promptly returned without missing a single snap and is currently back in the game. It appears Mayfield will tough this one out, but his Week 7 status needs to be monitored.

Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman Ziggy Ansah seems to be fitting in, and head coach Pete Carroll is excited about the future for Ansah and the rest of his defensive line. Carroll told reporters this week that he feels like his front guys are on the verge of breaking out because while they haven't been tallying many sacks, they have been getting through the line and pressuring quarterbacks. As the Seahawks Defense prepares to face Baker Mayfield, one of the most sacked QBs in the league, everyone is champing at the bit to get down to business and start racking up the numbers. This week is a great opportunity to do it.

Oct 11 8:10am ET

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield will take on the Seattle Seahawks at home after a disastrous Week 5 loss on Monday night. Mayfield was sacked four times last week and was seen with his shoulder and leg wrapped at the team facility during the week. His status for Week 6 isn't a concern but his fantasy outlook against Seattle certainly is. Seattle's pass defense hasn't been great this season, ranking 19th in DVOA and allowing the 16th-most fantasy points per game to the position. Despite the encouraging matchup, the Cleveland offense is simply working through too many issues for Mayfield to be trusted in fantasy leagues. Treat him as a mid-range QB2 in Week 6.

Oct 9 11:33pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield (leg, shoulder) had his leg and shoulder wrapped after the Week 5 game against the Sean Francisco 49ers according to reports. However, head coach Freddie Kitchens doesn't expect the issues to linger. 'I am sure he was bumped and bruised,' Kitchens said Wednesday, Oct. 9. 'He got hit more than I would like him to get him, but he will be fine.'

Fantasy Spin: Maybe Mayfield will be fine physically, but his game was certainly sick in the Week 5 game against the San Francisco 49ers, posting his worst completion percentage and lowest yardage total in a game since becoming a starter. Things do not seem to get better with a tough Seattle Seahawks defense coming to town in Week 6, so fantasy owners will want to beware.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield (leg, shoulder) had his leg and shoulder wrapped following the Monday night loss to the 49ers, but head coach Freddie Kitchens doesn't expect the injuries to linger. I am sure he was bumped and bruised, Kitchens said of Mayfield, who was sacked four times. He got hit more than I would like him to get hit, but he will be fine. Mayfield and the Browns came into the 2019 with sky-high expectations, but so far they haven't lived up to them in the slightest. Going into Week 6 at home against the Seahawks, Mayfield will be a midrange QB2 in need of a bounce-back outing. It hasn't helped that his offensive line is one of the worst in the NFL.

Oct 7 11:20pm ET

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield had a rough evening in a 31-3 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 5. Mayfield completed just eight of his 22 pass attempts for 100 yards while throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble. Mayfield had very little time to throw in the game, with a fearsome San Francisco pass rush sacking him four times and hitting him countless others. The second-year quarterback wound up sitting out during his team's final offensive possession as Cleveland chose to get third-string quarterback Garrett Gilbert some reps instead of risking injury to Mayfield. Cleveland will look to bounce back in Week 6 against the Seattle Seahawks. Treat Mayfield as a low-end QB2 in that one.

Oct 7 11:13pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield completed 8-of-22 passes for 100 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in Week 5 against the San Francisco 49ers and he was pulled late in the fourth quarter.

Fantasy Spin: Mayfield was awful, but so was the rest of the team. Poor tackling, no pass protection, etc. Mayfield and the Browns will look to bounce back against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 6. Mayfield has devolved into a low-end QB2 in fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams right now.

Oct 4 11:10am ET

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield turned in his best performance of the season in a Week 4 win over the Baltimore Ravens. He will look to build upon that in a road game against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night. Mayfield sets up as a QB2 in fantasy for Week 5, thanks to a San Francisco pass defense that has been much-improved from 2018, ranking second in DVOA through three games. Also, the Browns may have found the key to their success on offense with a run-first attack featuring Nick Chubb. If that continues, Mayfield will see fewer opportunities to drop back. Mayfield has yet to throw for multiple touchdowns in a game this season and has topped 300 passing yards just twice.

Sep 29 4:43pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield completed 20-of-30 passes for a season-best 342 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Week 4 against the Baltimore Ravens. He was also sacked just once, a season low.

Fantasy Spin: Mayfield posted his second 300-yard game of the season, both on the road. While he still has just four touchdowns and six interceptions, he had his best stat day for fantasy owners. The Browns hit the road again in Week 5 for Monday Night Football in San Francisco.

Sep 27 11:10am ET

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield will be looking to shake off a slow start to the season when he faces off against the division-rival Baltimore Ravens on the road in Week 4. Mayfield has completed 62 of his 109 passes for 805 yards, three touchdowns, and five interceptions through the first three games of the season. He draws a decent matchup against a Baltimore pass defense that has been vulnerable through the air this season, ranking 20th in DVOA. Mayfield played well in his two meetings against Baltimore in 2018, averaging 359.0 passing yards and throwing four touchdowns and four picks. Based on his early results, Mayfield is best treated as a low-end QB2 in fantasy this weekend.

Sep 23 6:50pm ET

Cleveland Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens said he's not considering giving up offensive play-calling duties after the team's Sunday night loss to the Rams in Week 3. The Browns are 1-2 and are averaging 16.3 points per game after three weeks. "It's me. It's my fault. Todd does a great job. Todd does a great job during the course of the week of making sure we stay on task. We stay organized and all that kind of stuff. But when things mess up it's going to be me," Kitchens said. It won't get any easier in Week 4 on the road against Baltimore's defense. The biggest thing is getting quarterback Baker Mayfield going. His completion percentage has dropped each week of the season and he has three touchdowns to five interceptions while taking 11 sacks in three weeks.

Sep 23 1:43am ET

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield completed 18 of his 36 passes for 195 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception during the club's loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, Sept. 22.

Fantasy Spin: Mayfield just isn't getting enough time to make things happen consistently, and Freddie Kitchens' playcalling has left plenty to be desired. There's still a lot of time left to get things ironed out, but a Week 4 matchup with the Ravens seems like a good time to explore your alternatives for a starting QB.

From TheHuddle

Sep 22 11:40pm ET

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield struggled in a 20-13 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3. Mayfield completed 18 of his 36 passes for 195 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. His touchdown came on a two-yard pass to Demetrius Harris while his fourth-down interception in the fourth quarter essentially ended the game for the Browns. The Cleveland offensive line continues to be an issue as they rarely afforded Mayfield much time to throw against a fearsome Los Angeles defensive line. He also didn't help matters much by bailing early on some clean pockets and trying to make throws on the run. Things won't get much easier for Mayfield or the Browns in Week 4 in a road matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. Treat Mayfield as a QB2 for that contest.

From RotoBaller

Sep 20 10:30am ET

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is off to a slow start in the 2019 season. Mayfield has 610 passing yards, two touchdowns, and four interceptions through two games. Cleveland will take on the Los Angeles Rams at home on Sunday night in Week 3. Fantasy owners who start Mayfield will surely be hoping this game develops into a shootout, although neither team has been as explosive on offense as expected. Mayfield has plenty of upside but his floor is much lower than fantasy owners hoped when they drafted him as their QB1. Treat him as a low-end QB1 or high-end QB2 for Week 3.

From RotoBaller

Sep 17 10:00pm ET

Cleveland Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens said that he needs to put quarterback Baker Mayfield in better position to succeed and get the ball out of his hand quicker because he's taking too many hits after two weeks. It hasn't helped that Cleveland's offensive line isn't giving Mayfield much time to throw, but Mayfield also needs to do a better job of reading the defense's coverage schemes. The Browns could have their hands full next Monday night against the Rams defensive front, making Mayfield more of a low-end QB1/high-end QB2 for that matchup. A shift to more of a short passing game could benefit Jarvis Landry as well.

From RotoBaller

Sep 17 8:53pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield is taking too many hits through the first two games of the season, according to head coach Freddie Kitchens Tuesday, Sept. 17. Kitchens said he needs to put Mayfield in position to get the ball out of his hand quicker.

Fantasy Spin: Mayfield ranks 34th out of 36 passers by averaging 3.07 seconds per throw, and he is tied for third with eight sacks taken through the first two games. The pressure is likely at least partially to blame for his completion percentage dropping from 63.8% as a rookie to 60.3% so far this year. He's a high-end QB2 who will be matchup dependent for the next few weeks.
