The New York Giants claimed rookie tight end Kaden Smith on Monday. Smith was waived by the San Francisco 49ers over the weekend to make room for running back Jeffery Wilson on the 53-man squad. The 2019 sixth-round pick was buried on the depth chart behind George Kittle, Ross Dwelley and Levine Toilolo in San Francisco and could immediately benefit on the talent-barren G-Men. The lost draft equity is costly for the Niners, but Smith was thoroughly outplayed during the preseason. Drafted out of Stanford, the catch-first tight end likely has significant strides to make before hes fantasy-relevant.

NBC Sports Bay Areas Matt Maiocco released his list of 20 players on the roster bubble on Thursday. Notable players in fantasy-relevant positions are wide receivers Kendrick Bourne and Jordan Matthews, rookie tight end Kaden Smith and running back Jeffery Wilson. Bourne led Niner receivers with 487 yards last season but has suffered drop issues this training camp. Newcomer Matthews has earned raving reviews but his lack of contribution on special teams could render him an expendable backup wideout. Drafted in the sixth round, Smiths potential cut is surprising but hes been outplayed by second-year tight end Ross Dwelley. Wilson, who has three touchdowns this preseason, saw his roster hopes skyrocket with the latest setback to running back Jerick McKinnon (knee). Barring a disastrous slew of injuries, these players are fantasy nonfactors.

Drafted in the sixth round, San Francisco tight end Kaden Smith could have a path to reps even with star George Kittle holding court at the position. Pro Football Focus cited Smith lined up at the slot 157 times in college last season and averaged 2.06 yards per route (15th-most). With fellow rookie wide receiver Jalen Hurd possessing a similar skillset, the two will likely do battle for goal line opportunities in a crowded receiving corps. Smiths scouting report suggests solid athleticism, subpar speed and the need to improve as a blocker. While he could develop as a valuable depth piece behind Kittle, Smith likely wont make any buzz heading into 2019 fantasy drafts.
