2022 RTSports Outlook

The Patriots used a fourth-round pick on Zappe, hoping to find a reliable backup for Mac Jones for years to come. Zappe has the tools to be an effective NFL quarterback. He is a true pocket passer that posted big numbers in college. He has good touch on the ball and can make all the throws from the pocket. He lacks a little size for the position, though, and doesn't have a huge arm. His lack of arm strength can be issues on fitting the ball in tight windows.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Zappe has little fantasy value, playing behind a second-year franchise quarterback.

New England Patriots rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe will most likely be the team's third QB behind second-year man Mac Jones and veteran Brian Hoyer. It seems like a long shot that Zappe will challenge Hoyer for the backup job at this time, but Hoyer was also viewed in the same way back in 2009 when he was competing against Kevin O'Connell before winning the job. The Patriots took Zappe in the fourth round of this year's draft out of Western Kentucky. The 23-year-old threw for 5,967 yards and 62 touchdowns in a historic senior season against weaker college competition. He's unlikely to be a difference-maker at the position because he lacks high-end arm strength and athleticism, but he could develop into a solid game manager because of his football IQ.

The Carolina Panthers are expected to host draft-eligible tackles Charles Cross, Evan Neal, and Ikem Ekwonu for Top 30 visits this week, according to Cameron Wolfe of ESPN. The team continues to do its due diligence on offensive line prospects as they evaluate whether they should draft a quarterback or tackle. Earlier this week, they met with a list of quarterbacks that included Sam Howell, Bailey Zappe, Malik Willis, Matt Corral, Desmond Ridder, and Kenny Pickett.

The Carolina Panthers are hosting quarterback prospects Malik Willis, Kenny Pickett, Matt Corral, Desmond Ridder, Sam Howell, and Bailey Zappe for visits, according to Albert Breer of The MMQB. All six of the visits will count towards Carolina's 30 permitted interviews with draft prospects. At this point, unless they trade back, it seems like the Panthers will most likely select a quarterback at No. 6. The team has grown understandably frustrated with its poor quarterback play over the years, including a woeful 2021 showing from Sam Darnold.
