2019 RTSports Outlook

Despite not scoring a touchdown last season, Riddick was still 43rd overall in fantasy running back scoring. He got his usual work as the top pass-catching back for the Lions and posted solid weekly numbers. Riddick had 61 receptions, giving him four straight seasons with 50-plus catches. Riddick excels in his role as a pass-catching back, a role he should serve again this year. Riddick is too small to be an every-down back but he does great as a receiver out of the backfield. He has good moves in open space and top hands at the position.

FANTASY OUTLOOK:   Riddick is very consistent for fantasy teams because of his reception totals. He has been a top-30 fantasy back two of the last three seasons. Expect more of the same. He won't get a ton of yards or many scores, but his reception totals will be very good for the position. Consider him a low-end No. 3 back. Look for him to finish with around 55 receptions and 600 total yards with three or four touchdowns.

RotoBaller's Outlook

It's a serious question. Why is Theo Riddick in the NFL? What does he contribute to an NFL team? At the risk of oversimplifying the position, there are two primary types of running backs: power backs and satellite backs. If a running back can't really run, that's okay as long as he is dynamic in the receiving game like Tarik Cohen or Duke Johnson. What is Riddick? He can't run. He has a career ypc of 3.6 and has only rushed for more than 50 yards in a game twice (both way back in 2016). The common perception of Riddick is that he is this great receiving back. Sure, he has good hands with a career 77.2% catch rate, but he's not explosive at all. His best attribute is his 59th percentile agility score, which is kind of irrelevant when he also has 7th percentile speed and 25th percentile burst. Riddick ran a 4.71 at 5'10, 201 lbs. Kerryon Johnson is a better pass catcher and he can also run the ball. But Matt Patricia is already one of the worst coaches in the NFL and will probably continue to shove Riddick out there on passing downs. Riddick will be what he has always been and that's a guy you can plug into your lineup that you know won't make a difference, but also won't get you zero. There's no reason to draft or roster a guy like Riddick. You stream him in a bind and then ignore him at all other times.

Detroit Lions RB Theo Riddick is not guaranteed to make the team out of training camp, in the opinion of the Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett.

Jan 24 4:53pm ET

Detroit Lions RB Theo Riddick is expected to be released or traded this offseason, which would save the Lions more than $3.4 million, according to Spotrac.

Fantasy Spin: Kerryon Johnson will be featured in his second season and LeGarrette Blount will be tasked with the short-yardage and goal-line duties. It makes sense for the Lions to cut ties, but Riddick will be wanted somewhere. He's a valuable pass-catching back with at least PPR flex upside.
