2020 RTSports Outlook

Breida started the season fast, having 100-yard games two of his first four, but he got a lot fewer chanc-es as the season progressed. He was the forgotten man for the 49ers, failing to have double-digit carries after Week 10. Breida finished with 743 total yards and two touchdowns on the season. He was traded to the Dolphins this offseason and could play a big role with his new team. Breida doesn't have huge size for the position but runs with some power and does well between the tackles. He also has enough speed to make plays on the outside. He did struggle with some fumbles late last year, which likely impacted his playing time.

FANTASY OUTLOOK: Breida is going to have some big games but disappear other weeks. He is a good reserve back but don't count on him as anything more than that. He can finish with 800 or so total yards and four or five scores. Remember, he played in a top rushing offense in San Francisco, so a move to Miami might not translate to past success for Breida.

RotoBaller's Outlook

Miami Dolphins running back Matt Breida left a crowded running back situation and now finds himself with a much more defined role in Miami. Breida and Jordan Howard will share significant touches, with Howard likely operating as the early down banger and Breida handling passing downs and the hurry up offense. Breida has always been impressive when on the field, but he is rarely 100% healthy. He plays through tons of nicks and bumps, but at times it limits his explosiveness and his potentially elite speed. If Breida can stay healthy and the Dolphins offense improves as it is expected to, Breida could end up returning legitimate flex value in 2020, especially in PPR formats.

The Miami Dolphins have yet to discuss a contract extension with running back Matt Breida after giving up the No. 153 overall pick in April's draft to acquire him from the 49ers. The running back is scheduled for unrestricted free agency after the 2020 season and is scheduled to make $3.3 million in the final year of his deal. Breida's career highs of 153 carries and 814 yards came with San Francisco in 2018. He is expected to share the backfield load with free-agent pickup Jordan Howard. Miami has understandably held off on extensions with uncertainty over how COVID-19 will affect the 2021 salary cap. The 25-year-old had 623 rushing yards in 2019 and is the better and cheaper fantasy option over Howard if he can just stay healthy.

Jul 9 2:43pm ET

Miami Dolphins RB Matt Breida has not had any contract extension talks with the Dolphins this offseason, according to a source.

Fantasy Spin: Breida will be sharing playing time with Jordan Howard this season, but it is not known which back will win the starting job. Breida has posted solid numbers over the last few seasons and could be a No. 3 or No. 4 fantasy running back depending on his role.

From TheHuddle

Jul 3 11:43pm ET

Miami Dolphins RB Jordan Howard could 'come close to doubling' the number of carries RB Matt Breida will receive, according to Cameron Wolfe of

Fantasy Spin: Howard probably won't see much work in the passing game, but if he does a bulk of the heavy lifting on early downs and near the goal line, he should at least be a solid flex option.

From TheHuddle

Jun 29 11:20pm ET

Miami Dolphins running backs Jordan Howard and Matt Breida are expected to share the backfield this season after the team finished last in rushing yards and last in yards per rush in 2019. Howard will offer power and is expected to be the short-yardage and goal-line back, while Breida delivers speed. Howard is third in the NFL in rushing attempts and yards since 2016. Patrick Laird could take some third-down repetitions from Breida if he makes the roster. Howard didn't fumble in 2019 and has just five fumbles in 897 career carries. Breida has averaged five yards per attempt in his career, while Howard is at 4.3. With Breida being one of the fastest backs in the league, offensive coordinator Chan Gailey will try to get him into space.

From RotoBaller

Jun 23 9:23pm ET

Miami Dolphins RB Matt Breida is tied with Denver Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay for second in the NFL since 2017 in yards before contact at 2.4 per carry, trailing only Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson (3.1) over that span.

From TheHuddle

May 29 6:53pm ET

Miami Dolphins RBs Jordan Howard and Matt Breida are both expected to receive solid playing time this upcoming season, but it is not known which one will start.

Fantasy Spin: The Dolphins added Howard and Breida this offseason and probably will use the preseason to determine their roles. Both have had success in the past but have also dealt with injuries. Fantasy players can consider Howard and Breida No. 3 or No. 4 fantasy running backs.

The Miami Dolphins are trading their fifth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft for San Francisco 49ers running back Matt Breida, according to a source. With just Jordan Howard and Kalen Ballage in Miami's backfield, the Dolphins were expected to draft a running back in the early rounds, but that didn't happen. Instead, they're trading for Breida, who was buried in San Fran's crowded backfield. As a result, he barely played during the team's Super Bowl run in 2019. Breida seems to constantly be playing through injuries, but he has run for 5.0 yards per carry in his three seasons and will immediately upgrade Miami's running game alongside Howard behind an offensive line that is being upgraded through the draft.

RB Matt Breida on Saturday, April 25, was traded from the San Francisco 49ers to the Miami Dolphins. In return, the 49ers received the Dolphins' fifth-round pick (153rd overall), which they used to select West Virginia OT Colton McKivitz.

Updating a previous story, San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida's one-year tender signed Thursday, April 16, is worth $3.259 million but it's not guaranteed.

From TheHuddle

Apr 16 6:43pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida signed his one-year contract tender Thursday, April 16.

Fantasy Spin: Breida was a hot draft target in 2019, but he has slipped firmly behind RBs Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman following injuries last season. He's at risk of being cut and will need to latch on elsewhere to have a shot at returning fantasy value.

From TheHuddle

Apr 5 1:20pm ET

San Francisco 49ers running back Matt Breida didn't have much of a role on offense to end last season behind Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman. If Jerick McKinnon is actually healthy in 2020, he gives the 49ers a legitimate route-runner and third-down option out of the backfield. San Fran could be willing to trade Breida's rights for a low-round draft pick. Of all the backs in this crowded backfield, Breida is the most likely to be playing for another team come the start of the season. The 25-year-old from Georgia Southern has been productive with 5.0 yards per carry on 381 career rushing attempts in his three years with the Niners, but he's also consistently battled nagging injuries and is now buried on the depth chart. A move out of this crowded backfield and onto another team with more opportunity would be best for Breida's real-life and fantasy value.

From RotoBaller

Apr 4 5:53pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida may not make the final roster next season because of the other running backs on the roster, in the opinion of NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.

Fantasy Spin: Breida fell behind Tevin Coleman and Raheem Mostert on the depth chart this season and could be on the trade block this offseason. He could be a solid backup for a team, but his fantasy value is uncertain at this point.

From TheHuddle

Mar 29 4:53pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RBs Raheem Mostert (3.5) and Matt Breida (3.3) ranked first and second, respectively, in the league among running backs in average yards before contact per attempt last season.

From TheHuddle

Mar 28 2:03pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida is a potential candidate to be traded, in the opinion of

Fantasy Spin: Breida saw a decline from his career numbers of 2018 (1,075 total yards, five TDs), totaling 743 yards and two scores last season. More alarmingly, he only had nine rushing attempts for 19 yards during the Niners' three-game ground-heavy run to the Super Bowl and with San Fran already rostering Tevin Coleman, Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson and possibly getting Jerick McKinnon back after a pair of seasons missed to injury, don't be surprised to see Breida dealt.

From TheHuddle

Mar 17 4:40pm ET

The San Francisco 49ers tendered restricted free-agent running back Matt Breida at the second-round level, according to a source. Breida is a valuable weapon for the Niners run-heavy approach. He totaled 123 carries for 623 yards (5.1 yards per carry) and one touchdown on the ground in 2019. Breida also added 19 receptions for 120 yards and another touchdown through the air. The 25-year-old has averaged a very healthy 5.0 yards per carry in his three seasons in the NFL, but the problem is the team's crowded backfield with Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman, Jeff Wilson Jr. and Jerick McKinnon. That's a lot of bodies, making the 49ers backfield situation a nightmare for fantasy owners. It will likely take an injury or two for Breida to see the field consistently in 2020.

From RotoBaller

Mar 17 4:23pm ET

San Francisco 49ers restricted free-agent RB Matt Breida was tendered at a second-round level Tuesday, March 17, according to a source.

Fantasy Spin: Breida will return to the backfield mix alongside Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman and Jerick McKinnon in 2020. He's likely to begin the season as the No. 3 option from the group and won't be worth much thought on draft day.

From TheHuddle

Feb 25 3:33pm ET

San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida is likely to receive an RFA tender, according to David Lombardi of The Athletic Tuesday, Feb. 25.

Fantasy Spin: Breida took a back seat to Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman during the Niners' run to Super Bowl LIV. He totaled 743 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns in the regular season while starting just five games. He should be viewed as the team's third option in the backfield if he returns in 2020.
