Nick Chubb out for season, but injury not career-threatening

Sat Sep 23 7:53pm ET
Field Level Media

Tests show that Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb's gruesome injury is not as bad as initially feared, and though he will be out for the rest of this season, the injury is now not considered career-threatening, according to ESPN.

Initial indications were that Chubb, 27, sustained a torn left anterior crucial ligament, but doctors now reportedly believe that although he stretched the ACL on the play, it was not a complete tear.

Chubb is now believed to have torn only his medial collateral ligament, which is not considered a career-ending injury, per ESPN. He is still expected to need six to eight months to recover.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski had announced Tuesday that Chubb would undergo season-ending surgery, which reportedly is expected to take place this week.

In Cleveland's 26-22 loss to the host Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night, Chubb rushed up the middle for a gain of 5 yards with 14:14 left in the second quarter and was in the process of being tackled by Pittsburgh linebacker Cole Holcomb when safety Minkah Fitzpatrick dropped his shoulder and ran directly into Chubb's left knee.

The hit by Fitzpatrick caused Chubb's leg to bend, and Chubb sat up and grabbed his knee and could be heard yelling in anguish through the field microphones.

Chubb rushed for 64 yards on 10 carries before exiting. He has 170 yards on 28 carries this season.

The four-time Pro Bowl selection topped 1,000 rushing yards in each of the past four seasons, gaining a career-high 1,525 last season. Chubb had 996 yards as a rookie in 2018 before beginning his streak of 1,000-yard seasons.

Pick'em Plays: Week 3

Player Notes
Richie James Sep 23 8:50pm ET
Richie James

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Richie James (knee) has been placed on the injured reserve on Saturday. He wasn't able to practice all week due to an MCL injury. James only played three offensive snaps in Week 2, but has an important role on special teams. There will now be a void to fill on special teams with James out for at least the next four games. He'll be eligible to return for the Week 7 matchup versus the Los Angeles Chargers. Fantasy managers can continue to ignore James in all fantasy formats.

Patrick Mahomes Sep 23 8:40pm ET
Patrick Mahomes

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes squares off with the Chicago Bears in Week 3 after exceeding the 300-yard threshold in last Sunday's clash against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 28-year-old hopes for his first three-touchdown effort of the campaign after accomplishing this feat on eight occasions a year ago. The Bears defense has submitted the NFL's highest opponent passer rating (118.3) to Jordan Love and Baker Mayfield over the opening two games, and have only posted one sack thus far. It's a glaring smash spot for Mahomes on Sunday perhaps as Week 3's top-ranked QB1 after Chicago's defensive coordinator suddenly resigned ahead of this contest. While there's some blowout risk attached to this game that could reduce passing volume, season-long managers can obviously trust the reigning MVP as perhaps Week 3's most bankable play at the position.

Kadarius Toney Sep 23 8:40pm ET
Kadarius Toney

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney (toe) is currently listed as questionable for the Week 3 matchup versus the Chicago Bears. The 24-year-old wasn't able to practice on Wednesday or Thursday this week. He was able to get through a limited practice session on Friday, so that appears to be enough for him. The team will take another look at Toney ahead of Sunday's contest. Barring any setbacks, Toney should be fine to suit up. He should be considered a risky flex play for this upcoming matchup with the Bears.

D.K. Metcalf Sep 23 8:30pm ET
D.K. Metcalf

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf (ribs) will play in Sunday's Week 3 matchup against the Carolina Panthers. He missed the first two practices to open the week, but was able to get in a full session on Friday. That appears to be enough for Metcalf as he'll suit up this weekend. Last week, Metcalf caught five of his 10 targets for 71 yards and a touchdown in the win over the Lions. Fantasy managers can safely pencil Metcalf back in their lineups for Week 3.

DeAndre Hopkins Sep 23 8:30pm ET
DeAndre Hopkins

Tennessee Titans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins (ankle) is expected to suit up for the Week 3 matchup versus the Cleveland Browns. The veteran wideout has been dealing with an ankle issue for over a week. Despite that, he suited up in Week 2 and continued to play well with four receptions for 40 yards. Hopkins opened this week with a full practice before being limited and then not practicing at all on Friday. He's listed as questionable for Sunday, but is fully expected to suit up for this game. Fantasy managers should check back closer to game time on Sunday.

Isiah Pacheco Sep 23 8:20pm ET
Isiah Pacheco

Kansas City Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco (hamstring) is listed as questionable for the upcoming Week 3 matchup against the Chicago Bears. Pacheco has been limited during practice this week, but still appears to be in good shape for this contest. Right now, the plan is for Pacheco to warm up with the team and see how his hamstring feels. That being said, Pacheco appears to be a legitimate game-time decision for Sunday's contest. If he sits out, Jerick McKinnon and Clyde Edwards-Helaire would likely split up the reps in the backfield. Neither of them have great fantasy appeal, but could be possible deep league options if Pacheco is unable to play.

Nick Chubb Sep 23 8:00pm ET
Nick Chubb

Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb (knee) suffered a season-ending injury during the Week 2 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. At first glance, this looked like possibly a career-ending injury for the superstar back. Luckily, it ended up being better than some people originally thought. Chubb has suffered a torn MCL and given a recovery timetable of six to eight months. The surgery hasn't happened yet, so this timetable could change. However, it sounds like Chubb could be back in action as early as the beginning of next season.

Melvin Gordon Sep 23 5:10pm ET
Melvin Gordon

Baltimore Ravens running backs Melvin Gordon and Kenyan Drake have been elevated from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of the Week 3 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. Justice Hill (toe) will miss Sunday's contest, leaving Gus Edwards as the only healthy running back on the active roster. The Ravens elevated Gordon last week against the Cincinnati Bengals. Yet, the veteran didn't see the field. Meanwhile, Baltimore added Drake to the practice squad earlier this week. Edwards will be the lead running back and the only viable starting option for fantasy players. However, expect Gordon and Drake to see some work tomorrow against the Colts.

From RotoBaller

Kenneth Gainwell Sep 23 4:50pm ET
Kenneth Gainwell

Philadelphia Eagles running back Kenneth Gainwell (ribs) is off the injury report and will play in Week 3 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The former Memphis star missed last week's matchup against the Minnesota Vikings after suffering a rib injury in Week 1. Gainwell played well on opening weekend against the New England Patriots, totaling 14 rushing attempts for 54 yards. The third-year running back also caught all four targets for 20 receiving yards in the win. Last week, D'Andre Swift filled in for Gainwell, totaling 28 rushing attempts for 175 yards and a touchdown against the Vikings. Fantasy players should expect both running backs to get work Monday night.

Jamaal Williams Sep 23 4:40pm ET
Jamaal Williams

New Orleans Saints running back Jamaal Williams (hamstring) was placed on injured serve. The veteran running back will miss at least the next four games. Williams suffered the hamstring injury in the team's Week 2 matchup against the New Orleans Saints. With the veteran out this week, Kendre Miller, Toney Jones Jr., and Taysom Hill will handle the backfield duties against the Green Bay Packers. Thankfully, Alvin Kamara's three-game suspension ends Monday morning. Fantasy players can drop Williams in redraft leagues if needed. The former Detroit Lion has 27 rushing attempts for only 74 yards and two receptions for seven receiving yards this season. When he returns, Williams will have a limited role with Kamara and Miller healthy.

From RotoBaller

Jaylen Waddle Sep 23 4:30pm ET
Jaylen Waddle

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle (concussion) won't play in Week 3 against the Denver Broncos. The superstar wide receiver suffered a concussion late in the Week 2 matchup against the New England Patriots. Miami elevated Robbie Chosen from the practice squad to the active roster, with Waddle unable to play. Wide receiver Braxton Berrios and tight end Durham Smythe should see a significant increase in snaps and targets this week with Waddle out of the lineup. Tyreek Hill will also see an increase in work on Sunday. Hopefully, Waddle can clear the concussion protocol this week and suit up for the Week 4 matchup against the Buffalo Bills.

From RotoBaller

Irv Smith Jr. Sep 23 3:00pm ET
Irv Smith Jr.

Cincinnati Bengals tight end Irv Smith Jr. (hamstring) is doubtful for Monday Night Football against the Los Angeles Rams. Smith Jr. practiced in a limited capacity on both Friday and Saturday but was listed as doubtful on the team's final injury report ahead of their MNF tilt against the L.A. Rams. The tight end position has not played a large role in Cincinnati's offensive game plan to start the season, Smith Jr. has just five catches for 27 scoreless yards through two games. Drew Sample and Mitchell Wilcox would fill in if Smith Jr. is unable to play but neither player has any fantasy value.

From RotoBaller

Jake Luton Sep 23 2:50pm ET
Jake Luton

Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Luton has been elevated from the practice squad ahead of the team's Week 3 contest against the Seattle Seahawks. This move makes sense with rookie starter Bryce Young (ankle) being ruled out from this game. Veteran QB Andy Dalton will start under center and Luton will back him up on Sunday. The Seahawks D/ST was a popular streaming option before Young was ruled out but should see even more of a roster increase with Dalton starting.

From RotoBaller

Puka Nacua Sep 23 2:40pm ET
Puka Nacua

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua (oblique) is listed as questionable for Monday Night Football vs. the Cincinnati Bengals. Despite the fact that the rookie WR has the questionable tag, head coach Sean McVay expects him to play, per beat writer Adam Grosbard. The Rams have been cautious with Nacua this week, limiting his practice reps while he deals with an oblique issue. He did not log a practice on Thursday but returned to action on Friday, which is a good sign. All signs point to him being ready to rock on MNF. He is a must-start across all fantasy formats as he's currently first in the NFL in receptions (25) and second in receiving yards (266) behind only Justin Jefferson.

From RotoBaller

DeeJay Dallas Sep 23 2:30pm ET
DeeJay Dallas

Seattle Seahawks running back DeeJay Dallas (illness) is listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's Week 3 game against the Carolina Panthers. The Seahawks released their final injury report on Friday, which listed quite a few players as questionable. However, head coach Pete Carroll, ever the optimist, said that Dallas and safety Julian Love (hamstring) are the only two questionable players he's "uncertain" about, according to beat writer Michael-Shawn Dugar. Dallas missed Friday's practice with an illness and if he can't suit up on Sunday then rookie running back Zach Charbonnet would be in line for a snap increase against the Panthers. Neither player has done much of anything up to this point in the season, though.

From RotoBaller

Joe Burrow Sep 23 2:20pm ET
Joe Burrow

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (calf) is questionable for Monday Night Football against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3. Head coach Zac Taylor told reporters on Saturday that "we'll see" in regard to Burrow playing or not. The Bengals also worked out and signed veteran QB AJ McCarron to their practice squad, which would indicate that Burrow truly is questionable after re-aggravating his calf in Week 2. Although the team hasn't released their final injury report at this time, beat writer Jay Morrison stated that Burrow will be listed as questionable. Fantasy managers that roster Burrow should already have a backup plan in place in case the fourth-year QB can't go on MNF. All of the Cincinnati pass-catchers, Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Tyler Boyd would be downgraded if Jake Browning ends up starting under center on MNF.

Chandler Jones Sep 23 12:20pm ET
Chandler Jones

The Las Vegas Raiders defense faces off against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 3 looking to bounce back from a 38-10 shellacking last week to the Bills. The Steelers have had struggles of their own offensively this year, ranking 31st in offensive yards and 26th in points per game. The Raiders D/ST have yet to force a turnover in two games this season and continue to be without star DE Chandler Jones, who has been absent from the team for personal reasons. Leave the Raiders defense on waivers again this week.

From RotoBaller

Curtis Samuel Sep 23 12:00pm ET
Curtis Samuel

Washington Commanders wide receiver Curtis Samuel (illness) has been upgraded to no injury designation for Week 3 and will be active on Sunday to face the visiting Buffalo Bills. Safety Kamren Curl (illness) will also play. Samuel wasn't on the injury report this week until he missed practice on Friday, and the team listed him as questionable. The 27-year-old seems to have improved and will once again serve as the No. 3 wideout behind Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson this weekend. At best, Samuel is a consideration as a flex play in deep fantasy leagues. Through the first two games in 2023, the veteran pass-catcher has only eight receptions (eight targets) for 73 yards and no touchdowns.

From RotoBaller

Daniel Carlson Sep 23 12:00pm ET
Daniel Carlson

Las Vegas Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson has been stellar when called upon so far in 2023, the problem is that has not been often enough. The 27-year-old is two-for-two on field goals and three-for-three on extra points for a Las Vegas offense that ranks 31st in points and 30th in yards after two weeks. The Raiders welcome the Steelers to town on Sunday night, a team giving up 11.5 fantasy points to opposing kickers so far this year. Carlson is an incredible talent weighed down by a below-average offense, making him a low-end kicker for fantasy managers at this point in the season despite the promising matchup.

From RotoBaller

Davante Adams Sep 23 11:50am ET
Davante Adams

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams practiced in full this week and is expected to suit up against the Steelers on Sunday after leaving last week's game late with concussion symptoms. Adams ranks as the WR17 in half-PPR so far this season, with 17 targets, 12 catches, 150 yards, and one touchdown. The 30-year-old will look to build on that in a promising matchup against the Steelers on Sunday. Adams projects to match up primarily against Pittsburgh CB Levi Wallace who has a below-average 42.0 coverage grade according to PFF. Adams is a safe WR1 for fantasy again this week.
