Henderson shows big play ability
We are going to do this every week going forward, giving you a quick recap of all the pertinent news and notes from the preseason games that took place. We will talk about injuries, position battles, depth charts and anything else that could impact the fantasy world.
Here is all the news from Week 1 of the preseason. . . .
Ravens rookie receiver LaJohntay Wester made a strong case to get some consistent touches during the regular season. He returned a punt for a touchdown and had two receptions for 41 yards on three targets. He showed off his great speed and big-play ability. He is battling for the fourth receiver job and could have a leg up over Devontez Walker and Tylan Wallace right now.
Running back Keaton Mitchell continues to make plays for the Ravens. He is having a strong camp and that carried over to his first preseason game. He had nine carries for 68 yards (7.6 yards per carry) and one touchdown. Derrick Henry is clearly the starter but Mitchell is going to be in the mix for carries and looks to be the handcuff to Henry. Mitchell could end up getting six to eight touches per game even if Henry is healthy and playing, giving him some standalone fantasy value.
Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson did not have the start he hoped, leaving the game early after getting sacked. He suffered a dislocated finger but avoided the worst and should be fine going forward. He did not suffer a break. He needs to be on the field to win the starting job, though, so missing preseason action is not a positive for him. The good news for Richardson is Daniel Jones was pretty ho-hum after taking over for Richardson. Jones was just 10-of-21 for 144 yards. He did not seize his opportunity.
Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders got his chance to start and took advantage of the opportunity, going 14-of-23 for 138 yards and two touchdowns, adding 19 rushing yards on four carries. Sanders made some great throws and showed off his big-time arm in the game. Joe Flacco still seems likely to open the season as the starter for Cleveland and Sanders was fourth on the depth chart going into this game, so he still has a lot of work to do to make the roster and make an impact for the team his rookie season. This game was certainly a step in the right direction for that to happen, though.
Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson is another rookie that showed well in his preseason debut. He ran once for 18 yards and caught three passes for 12 yards. He also returned the opening kickoff for a 100-yard touchdown. Henderson showed off his big-time speed and playmaking ability in the open field. He is going to be a problem for opposing defenses and looks to be a big part of this Patriots offense his rookie season. This game should really get fantasy owners excited about his prospects for this coming season.
We stick with the rookie theme and look at Panthers rookie receiver Tetairoa McMillan. He got five targets in his preseason debut and caught two for 43 yards. McMillan has a chance to rack up a ton of catches his rookie season in this offense. Bryce Young looked his way early and often.
And speaking of the Panthers, quarterback Bryce Young was efficient in his first preseason game, going 4-of-6 for 58 yards and a touchdown. He had a great finish to last season and looks to carry that momentum into this year. Things are looking up for the third-year signal caller. This Panthers offense could take a big step forward.
The Giants have to be excited about rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart. He was 12-of-19 for 154 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in New York's preseason opener. Russell Wilson is the starter this year but he is keeping the seat warm for Dart. He is the future at the position and could be starting sooner than later if he keeps progressing like he has to start his career. New York might have finally found their franchise quarterback in Dart.
The Vikings got their first look at quarterback JJ McCarthy. He wasn’t in there long but showed pretty well, finishing 4-of-7 for 30 yards. McCarthy certainly looked like he belonged and can handle the starting quarterback duties for the Vikings. He also was without Justin Jefferson, who might be the best receiver in football. McCarthy has a chance to make some noise in his first season as a full-time starter in the NFL.
It looked pretty bad at the time but it seems Titans running back Tyjae Spears avoided the worst with his injury in the preseason. He suffered a high-ankle sprain and will miss some time. But he had to be carted off the field because of the injury, so many thought he suffered a possible season-ending injury. The good news is he will be back but the bad news is he could be slowed early in the regular season. Tony Pollard might have to carry the load a little more to start the year.
There were a lot of bad reports out of Jets camp in recent days, saying Justin Fields is struggling. He got to play in their preseason opener and did well, which was encouraging. Fields was 3-of-4 for 42 yards and ran for 14 yards and a touchdown. His work on the ground is what makes him so intriguing to fantasy owners. Fields can do some big-time damage with his legs.
The Titans have to be happy with what they saw from rookie quarterback Cam Ward. He got his feet wet and played a few series, looking pretty solid. Ward finished 5-of-8 for 67 yards. He looked Calvin Ridley’s way often. Ridley had three receptions for 50 yards. This connection could be a great one for fantasy owners.
Many fantasy owners want to see how the Jaguars are going to use rookie Travis Hunter. If the first preseason game is any indication, it sure looks like he will be used a lot more offensively than defensively. He ran with the first-time offense to start the game and caught two passes for nine yards. He did not play defense at all until his day as a receiver was over. It sure seems like Hunter will be used more as a receiver to start his career, getting some situational work as a cornerback defensively. This is good news for his fantasy value going forward if this remains the pattern for his usage.
The Vikings seem likely to be without receiver Rondale Moore for the rest of the season. He suffered a knee injury in their preseason game and it didn’t look good. Head coach Kevin O’Connell stated after the game that the injury was pretty significant. Moore was set to serve as the No. 4 receiver and possible return man for the Vikings.
Dolphins running back Alexander Mattison is looking to grab the No. 2 running back job but left their first preseason game early because of neck and shoulder soreness. He is going to need to be on the field and performing if he hopes to be the top backup in the Dolphins high-powered rushing attack. This injury is one to watch going forward. It could hurt his chances for playing time early in the year.
The Saints have a quarterback battle on their hands between Spencer Rattler and rookie Tyler Shough. Rattler has been outperforming him in camp but Shough was the better of the two in their first preseason game. This battle seems wide open right now. Shough was 15-of-22 for 165 yards and a touchdown with an interception. Rattler threw for just 53 yards and ran for 22 but lost a fumble. Who knows how this quarterback battle plays out?

2025 Fantasy Quarterback Preview
Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin was seen talking to team GM Adam Peters on the sidelines during Tuesday's practice. McLaurin has been holding-in over the past few weeks as he is seeking a long-term extension from the Commanders. The Commanders have thus far been reluctant to budge on their price while McLaurin is rumored to be seeking a contract similar to what DK Metcalf got from the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier in the offseason. While there is no way to tell what exactly was said between McLaurin and Peters on Tuesday, it at least provides a glimmer of hope that the two are talking. The Commanders would have a hard time replacing their No. 1 receiver's production on the field if he's not in the fold by the time Week 1 rolls around. If McLaurin ultimately rejoins the team, he can be treated as a rock-solid WR2 in fantasy drafts later this summer.

Free-agent running backs Mike Boone and Aaron Shampklin have signed contracts with the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins wasted little time beefing up their running-back corps after they lost Alexander Mattison (neck) to a season-ending neck injury following their first preseason game on Sunday. Boone played in six games for the Carolina Panthers in 2024, handling 13 carries for 51 yards. Shampklin appeared in four games for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, carrying the ball six times for 17 yards. Both players will compete with Ollie Gordon II and Jaylen Wright for a reserve role behind locked-in starter De'Von Achane.

The Las Vegas Raiders signed free-agent Marquez Callaway and waived wide receiver Kawaan Baker in a corresponding move on Monday. Callaway is beginning his second stint with the Raiders after spending some time on the team's practice squad back in 2023. The veteran wideout has 83 catches for 1,069 yards and seven touchdowns across 47 games in his career since entering the NFL in 2020. Callaway will battle for a reserve spot on the Raiders' initial 53-man roster as the regular season approaches.

Miami Dolphins running back Alexander Mattison (neck) was officially placed on injured reserve on Monday. Mattison injured his neck during a preseason game against the Chicago Bears on Sunday and later went for surgery. It was announced on Monday that he would miss the remainder of the year, with the team placing him on IR just as a procedural move to clear roster space. Mattison's absence will open up reps for second-year running back Jaylen Wright and rookie Ollie Gordon II behind starter De'Von Achane.

Buffalo Bills running back James Cook is expected to practice on Tuesday, according to head coach Sean McDermott. Cook has been holding in at camp for over a week while calling his absence a "business decision." He dressed for Buffalo's first preseason game against the New York Giants on Saturday but refused to take the field. According to McDermott, the Bills and Cook have been having good conversations, which may have led to Cook's change of heart when it comes to practicing. Assuming Cook continues to participate throughout the remainder of training camp, Cook sets up as a solid RB2 in fantasy drafts later this summer.

Buffalo Bills WR Curtis Samuel (hamstring) could be in jeopardy of not making the 53-man roster, in the opinion of Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic, who notes that this is the second consecutive training camp that Samuel has suffered a multi-week injury. Cutting Samuel now would be the same as cutting him in the offseason, and though Buscaglia believes Samuel's play late last season still could be enough to land on the initial roster, he isn't 'ruling out' the possibility that Samuel will be released.

New England Patriots wide receiver Javon Baker has been working with the special teams unit during practice and in the preseason opener against Washington. Additionally, the second-year wideout continuously makes highlight catches when given the opportunity on offense. It's a positive to see Baker taking on and succeeding in any possible role under the new coaching staff, as it could earn him an opportunity down the line in a thin receiver room. The 23-year-old saw little action as a rookie but brings good size at 6'2", 195 pounds, along with solid athleticism and a strong final season at UCF. He totaled over 1,100 receiving yards and averaged 21.9 yards per reception, the second most in the country. There is still upside in the tank with Baker, and he could be a name to keep in mind if he gets an opportunity.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco took all of the first-team reps during the team's 11-on-11 session on Monday, according to Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN. After rookie Shedeur Sanders generated plenty of buzz in his solid preseason debut against the Panthers, it was still the veteran signal caller who dominated reps, which limited Sanders and Dillon Gabriel to alternating reps with the second and third teams. It is almost assuredly Flacco's job to lose at this stage in training camp, and that is a positive for Cleveland's pass catchers. There should be plenty of pass volume as the Browns are expected to trail in games a good amount of the time. Flacco doesn't scramble and does well enough in avoiding sacks to support a functional pass-catching group. However, it is also likely that we see one or both of the rookie signal callers at some point during the second half of the season.

New England Patriots wide receiver Ja'Lynn Polk (shoulder) was on the outside looking in of beat reporter Chad Graff of The Athletic's latest 53-man roster projection. Graff notes that the shoulder injury Polk suffered in the team's first preseason game on Friday "further hurts his chances at making the team." Polk had a horrible rookie season in 2024, recording 12 catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns in 15 games (seven starts). Even still, it would be a rapid fall from grace to see him get cut before his second season, given that he was the 37th overall pick of the 2024 draft. Graff has 2024 fourth-rounder Javon Baker making the team as the WR6 ahead of Polk.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jacob Cowing (hamstring) is expected to return to practice on Tuesday, according to David Lombardi of the SF Standard. Cowing has been nursing a hamstring injury that he suffered a few weeks ago, but he looks set to return to the practice field before the second preseason game. The 49ers receiver room has been dealing with multiple injuries, including Jauan Jennings, Brandon Aiyuk, and most recently, rookie Jordan Watkins. Cowing had an uneventful rookie season but had gaudy production during college and has an opportunity to emerge. He won't be on many fantasy radars in drafts, but he could be a name to keep in mind as the season gets closer.

Chicago Bears running back Kyle Monangai is emerging as the workhorse that the Bears envisioned when they selected him in the seventh round of this year's draft. He had a strong debut in Sunday's preseason game against the Dolphins, rushing for 30 yards on six carries while working mostly in the first half. The Rutgers product showcased his tough, downhill running style, potentially mirroring the roles David Montgomery and Jamaal Williams filled as the hammer back in Ben Johnson's Lions offenses. Monangai logged 669 carries without a fumble at Rutgers, accumulating 3,221 rushing yards over four seasons, the second most in school history. Quarterback Caleb Williams and the coaching staff have consistently praised the rookie, and he is expected to be in the mix for touches alongside D'Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson in the Bears' backfield. He is a solid, cheap bet to make at the end of drafts in an ambiguous backfield.

New England Patriots TE Hunter Henry (undisclosed) was held out of practice on Monday, Aug. 11, after picking up an apparent injury during practice on Sunday, Aug. 10. His availability for the team's second preseason matchup with the Minnesota Vikings is unknown.

Dynasty | Texans tight end Brevin Jordan was injured at practice Monday. Dynasty Analysis: No word yet on the severity of the injury but the word "inconsolable" was used and Jordan was apparently in tears. This has the looks of an obvious season-ending injury and an unfortunate one after he missed all but two games last season. Jordan has talent but another lost year would unfortunately wipe away his dynasty value.
Dynasty | 49ers wide receiver Jordan Watkins is out for around four weeks with a high ankle sprain. Dynasty Analysis: This is a big-time buzzkill since he started the preseason strong and had a clear path to early playing time considering the current state of the injury-riddled depth chart in San Francisco. This should have no bearing on his dynasty value but his short-term appeal is going to take a hit since these injuries have a tendency to linger.
Atlanta Falcons WR Jamal Agnew (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Monday, Aug. 11.

The Tennessee Titans have signed free-agent quarterback Trevor Siemian and waived fellow signal-caller Tim Boyle. Siemian spent time with the Titans in 2020 and 2024, but he has never appeared in a regular-season game with the team. The 33-year-old debuted with the Denver Broncos in 2015 and has since played in 40 games (33 starts), completed 58.5% of passes, and thrown 44 touchdowns against 32 interceptions. Siemian will now replace Boyle as the Titans' third quarterback behind rookie starter Cam Ward and veteran backup Brandon Allen. Boyle completed just 4-of-13 passes for 24 yards and two interceptions in the Titans' 29-7 preseason-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday. Allen didn't shine either, going 6-for-12 for 62 yards and a pick. He'll have an opportunity to improve when the Titans face the Atlanta Falcons in their second preseason game on Friday. It's unclear if Siemian will see any action.

The San Francisco 49ers have placed running back Ameer Abdullah (ribs) on season-ending Injured Reserve, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Abdullah, who just joined the 49ers as a free agent on July 31, suffered a rib injury in a preseason-opening 30-9 loss to the Denver Broncos this past Saturday. While the 32-year-old was unlikely to make much of an impact this season (if any), it's another hit to San Francisco's depth in the backfield. The team is already set to go multiple weeks without injured Christian McCaffrey backups Isaac Guerendo (shoulder) and Jordan James (finger). The 49ers brought back Jeff Wilson Jr. in free agency on Sunday in the wake of Abdullah's injury to provide some much-needed healthy depth behind McCaffrey.
From RotoBaller
Cleveland Browns running back Pierre Strong Jr. (undisclosed) returned to practice as a limited participant on Monday. Strong had been down with an undisclosed injury. After appearing in 14 games and rushing for 108 yards on 26 carries last year, Strong is competing for a backup role this summer. He's currently third on the Browns' unofficial depth chart behind Jerome Ford and rookie fourth-round pick Dylan Sampson. The team also has rookie second-rounder Quinshon Judkins, who remains without a contract as he deals with an ongoing misdemeanor battery/domestic violence case. The longer Judkins is away, the more opportunities Strong should receive. Strong didn't play in the Browns' 30-10 preseason-opening win in Carolina last week, and it's unclear if he'll suit up against the Philadelphia Eagles this Saturday.
From RotoBaller
Baltimore Ravens running back Keaton Mitchell (undisclosed) once again did not practice on Monday, according to Brian Wacker of the Baltimore Sun. Mitchell, who's dealing with an undisclosed injury, hasn't practiced since an impressive preseason-opening performance against the Indianapolis Colts last Thursday. The 23-year-old carried the ball nine times for a team-high 68 yards and a touchdown in the Ravens' 24-16 win. Mitchell missed all but five games last season while recovering from a torn ACL he suffered in 2023, his rookie campaign. If he's healthy this year, Mitchell will vie for touches behind superstar workhorse Derrick Henry. The Ravens are set to play their next preseason game on Saturday in Dallas, but it's unclear if Mitchell will be available to follow up on his productive showing from last week.
From RotoBaller
San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver Jordan Watkins (ankle) suffered a high-ankle sprain and will miss a month, according to Vic Tafur of The Athletic. Watkins was injured in Saturday's 30-9 loss to the Denver Broncos in the preseason opener. Before getting hurt, he caught three of his six targets for 56 yards. The 23-year-old was a fourth-round pick back in April but might not be ready for the start of the 2025 regular season in early September. Watkins wasn't going to be a starter on offense in his rookie season, but there is certainly opportunity in a banged-up Niners receivers room with Brandon Aiyuk (knee) potentially not making his season debut until Week 6. With Jauan Jennings and Jacob Cowing also dealing with injuries in training camp, Demarcus Robinson has a big opportunity to impress the coaching staff.
